Remember the Tom Hanks movie "Big"? In the film's iconic
scene Hanks's character plays a giant piano on the floor at the FAO
Schwarz toy store in New York City. Well, a
video on YouTube
showcases an even cooler version of that giant piano … and this one is
alive! It's called Le Piano Vivant, which means "The Living Piano" in
French. The video was released by French-Canadian educational and
cultural site TFO. The giant 12-note human piano was set up in a park in
Quebec. Each singer carries the specific tone of each key, and when a
participant steps on a key, the human "piano string" sings that note.
The stunt was put together in collaboration with the Quebec opera
festival, and the part of each string was actually sung by an opera
singer. The purpose of Le Piano Vivant was to bring opera to the people
by inviting the public to engage with a new, interactive, and
never-before-seen instrument. Bring on more giant human instruments —
sounds like music to our ears.
