Glyn Schofield says everything he has done in an international career as a jockey pales in comparison to watching his son Chad win the Cox Plate.
An excited Schofield led the cheering in the Rosehill jockeys’ room on Saturday as 19-year-old Chad steered three-year-old Shamus Award to an all-the-way win in Australia’s weight-for-age championship at Moonee Valley.
‘‘This is the best moment of my life,’’ Schofield said.
‘‘It is unbelievable.
‘‘We spoke this morning and he had a plan and he rode it exactly as he said.
‘‘What a ride.‘‘He had three different horses coming at him and putting pressure on him and he kept his cool.
‘‘I am so proud of him and I want to thank Danny O’Brien for having the faith to put this kid on.
‘‘I’m having a beer and then I’m going straight to the airport to get on a plane to Melbourne to celebrate.’’
Just for the record, the elder Schofield rode a treble at Rosehill, something he had forgotten about by 5.45pm on Saturday.
Glyn Schofield could well be opposed to his son during Melbourne Cup week, but for now it’s all about his boy.

A remarkable run in the Cox Plate by Shamus Award which had not notched a win in nine previous starts. Adding to the story is that the horse, initially an emergency until Atlantic Jewel was scratched, was ridden by an teenage apprentice Chad Schofield. The finish, with Happy Trails coming from the clouds capped off an exciting day of racing. New Zealand star It’s A Dundeel finished unplaced after being trapped wide for most of the race.

12:48pm: There was a bit of drama out of Manikato Stakes night at Moonee Valley with Michael Rodd among five jockeys suspended for careless riding. Rodd was outed for 10 meetings after pleading guilty to interference going out of the straight the first time on Queenstown, who went on to win Friday’s City Jeep Handicap. Rodd’s suspension starts after Saturday’s Cox Plate in which he rides Masked Marvel. He will miss Victoria Derby day at Flemington on Saturday week but is free to return on Melbourne Cup day. Leading apprentice Chad Schofield was outed for eight meetings while Damian Lane was hit with a 10 meeting ban and both will also miss Derby day. Dwayne Dunn’s seven meeting suspension means he will not miss a feature meeting while Danny Adam was the other rider outed and will miss eight meetings.
